GRAND MASTERS & ENDURING IMAGES
Centuries of art have provided us with this truth: drawing has been and always will be one of the truly fine modes of artistic expression. The person undertaking the study of drawing need not fear that he is frittering away his hours on a trivial pursuit. In the Fall of 1959 Knoedler's art gallery in New York City held an exhibition of Grand Master Drawings. This was a most ambitious exhibition. It covered seven centuries of outstanding drawings. A variety of techniques were represented: pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, tinted effects on a variety of subtly colored papers. The exhibition was under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and President Dwight Eisenhower. The New York Times' Sunday section on art chose to illustrate its coverage of the exhibition with Corona's excellent NUDE YOUTH SEATED. If we have a collector of matchbook covers we also must have a collector of drawings. However, the collector of drawings like the collector of paintings operates on a more celestial level. One collector of drawings is the Royal Family of Britain. Six of the drawings at Knoedler's Grand Masters exhibition were lent by Queen Elizabeth II. Among the six drawings which the queen sent were HERCULES AND ANTAEUS, two robust nudes drawn in gray chalk some time before 1523 by Signorelli.

John Canaday who wrote the critique of the Grand Masters exhibit for The New York Times was wise to remark that people today should not see drawings only as intimate expressions dearly held by creative artists, but they should see them also as important corollaries to painting. For one approaches paintings through the study of drawings and conversely, one arrives at the essence of drawings through the study of paintings.
